One of the coolest things about being a writer is sometimes you get to tell the future. For instance, anytime I tell someone I wrote a book, I know exactly what their next words will be. “What’s it about?” When answering this question, I always like to start out with the synopsis. How did I get here? It’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves. When the Devil starts to ask herself the same question, she begins to recollect her tragic fall from grace. My Soul Burned is a brutally atrocious tale of sex, violence, and despair; narrated by the Devil herself as she elaborates on her extraordinary transformation from God’s most beloved angel, to cursed outcast, to the epitome of all that is evil!

After that, I usually reiterate that the story does get very graphic at times. I don’t give this warning because I think being dark or graphic is a bad thing, I just know it’s not for everyone. Then I specify that this is a completely fictional dark fantasy story but of course, there are biblical and real-world references. After that, I tell them they have to read the book. I don’t want to spoil everything.

Now you might be wondering what would make someone think of such a dark and unconventional story. The seed was planted many years ago. I was watching the remake of Bedazzled. This was the one with Brenden Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley. There is a scene in which the Devil, played by Hurley, is trying to get Elliot, played by Fraser, to sell his soul. She tells him, “You won’t miss your soul; it’s like your appendix.” To which Elliot replies, “If it’s so worthless then why do you want it so bad?” She avoided the question and ironically her avoidance really captured my attention and I started to think, I had seen so many stories where the Devil wanted your soul but I had never seen one that explained why.

To me, writing is all about asking yourself questions and making up answers. I started asking myself, why would the Devil want your soul? Other than just corruption of course. What value would the Devil get? I kept thinking about these questions and asking even more. Eventually, my answer ended up being 288 pages.

Now of course, just like every writer, I want to believe my story is for everyone. However, if I’m being a bit more realistic I would say there are three target audiences for this story. The first target would be lovers of dark fantasy. This story is about the Devil so hopefully, no one is too surprised there are twisted supernatural elements and dark humor. Another group that would enjoy this tale is people who fancy unique perspectives. This is a very different look at the Devil. Lastly, the third audience would be anyone who likes a thought-provoking story. While recollecting her extensive journey she encounters several crossroads and faces challenging questions about choices and responsibility.
From Imaginary Flights to Published Pages: The Journey of a Late-Blooming Writer with a Taste for Drama and Fantasy
I don’t know exactly what the future will hold for me or my story but ideally, the book will sell an astronomical amount of copies or at least enough to attract the attention of a steaming service. This book is about the Devil all throughout history so there is lots of room to really expand the story. I personally like to write stories that are wrapped tight but with a different writer, I could see this being a hit show with multiple seasons.
I’ve always enjoyed the world of imagination and fantasy; whether it was trying to fly off a balcony with a Batman cape, (Yes that did happen) or creating storylines with my action figures, I’ve always had a taste for drama. However, I never considered being a writer until late in adulthood. I think I never gave it too much thought because I’ve always been terrible at spelling and grammar. Ironically I feel this is actually very common for writers.

Although I didn’t take writing seriously until I was an adult, I did think about it once before. When I was in grade school 4th or 5th grade we had an assignment to write a 3-page true story of a vacation or trip. I couldn’t think of anything interesting so I wrote about a wrestling event I watched on T.V. but I wrote it as if I were there. It was so convincing my teacher believed I was actually at the event. That was the first time I thought to myself, “Well- maybe?”
