John M. Masciale’s The Lord Project is not just another Bible book sitting on a shelf, but the result of one man’s deep curiosity and his desire to answer a big question: How does God relate to us, and how should we respond to Him?
Masciale took a simple homework assignment and turned it into an eight-year journey through the entire Bible. He’s not just a theologian with a master’s degree from Liberty University but also a software engineer with over thirty years of experience in data analysis.
This combination of faith and technology is what makes The Lord Project so special. Essentially, he wrote computer programs to search through eight different translations of the Bible, looking for every time the Bible mentioned “the Lord,” “Jesus,” “Christ,” and the “Holy Spirit.”
His goal was to find patterns and connections that are easy to miss when just reading the text from start to finish.

He developed a “project” to track the “threads” of God’s message through the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. The result is a 568-page book that helps readers see the big picture of who God is and what He asks of us.
More Than Just a List of Verses

Many people think of a concordance as a list of where to find words in the Bible. The Lord Project is much more than that. Masciale’s software searched for the most frequent words that appear next to “the Lord.”
The most common one by far was “said.”
This tells us that the Bible is not just a collection of stories but God’s direct communication to humanity.
The book organizes its findings into two main categories.
- First, there are the “God-to-humankind” words, covering what God does for us and including things like His commands, His blessings, His love, and even His judgment.
- Second, there are the “humankind-to-God” words, which cover how we respond to Him, including our praise, our worship, our prayers, and our sins.
To make it easier to understand, Masciale groups verses into helpful topics, which you can quickly find through chapters such as “The Glory of the Lord,” “The House of the Lord,” or “The Day of the Lord.”
Each chapter starts with a table listing all the relevant Bible verses.
Then, the author provides summaries to explain the context, making The Lord Project an excellent tool for anyone who wants to study a specific topic in depth without getting lost.
From the Old Testament to the New Testament

One of the most powerful aspects of The Lord Project is how it connects the Old and New Testaments. Many people read the Bible and feel that it is two separate books. Masciale shows the opposite, tracing the same themes from the prophets all the way to the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. He explores how the word “Lord” is used with Jesus’ name, which emphasizes the fact that Jesus is not just a teacher or a prophet, and that He is “Lord of all.”
In the epistles, the focus shifts to what it means to be “in Christ.” Masciale helps the reader understand that being in Christ is connected to the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, while also looking at the phrase “Son of Man,” which Jesus used for Himself. There are two primary themes that appear in these verses:

The Heart of the Message

Throughout the pages of The Lord Project, one theme stands out above all others: the desire for a relationship. The Bible shows that God has always made the first move. He spoke to Adam and Eve, made a covenant with Abraham, delivered Israel from Egypt, and sent Jesus to save the world: the book traces these “God-to-humankind” actions. He is a God who acts, who loves, and who saves.
On the other side of that relationship is our response. We see throughout the pages the many ways people failed. “We are Sinners” is the title of one of the chapters. The Bible does not hide the fact that humanity is rebellious, but it also shows what should be the right response: we are called to trust, to love, to obey, and to worship.
