Reimagining Traditions and Unveiling the Supernatural in Louisiana
I want to thank Authors’ Lounge for letting me share everything and anything about my horror novel, DARK DESCENDANTS.
In Dark Descendants, I take traditions like Christmas and even engagements, twisting them on their heads. Literally and figuratively. We follow Sheriff Tre Finkle as she returns to Pine Island, the home she has ever known, in search of a missing teen. But once there she is shunned while the strange and unusual stalks her. And the other way around.
Louisiana has a rich history of the unknown and frightening. I have always been partial in sharing my culture and expanding them. From vampires, werewolves, the casket girls, Louisiana is the best setting for all my books.
A Southern Tale of Mystery, Rivalry, and Dark Twists
There is something for everyone within the pages. The mystery of the missing teen, the love/hate sibling rivalry between Tre and her lantern-tooting brother, the noting deputy, the southern cooking of Sabine, and the darkness stalking – there is a little of everything for everyone. Horror fans and southern lovers will enjoy being in Tre’s world. It is twisted and constantly on a spiral down.
Eliciting Unease and Suspense in Every Page
I hope readers feel that uneasiness as they read. I want them to wrinkle their noses at some scenes. I’ll mention one where an elongated tongue stretches and licks the back of Tre’s hands. I want to emphasize and emanate the sense of being watched over your shoulder as you try to figure out what is happening on Pine Island.
Creating Memorable Moments and Encouraging Further Exploration
For me, the goals are for readers to have a fun time reading it. I want them to remember that certain scene in the book that hovers over their heads. Maybe even making them reread it and of course share their experience with it. Also, I hope readers are willing to check out my other books to see how it makes them feel.
Horror as a Lifelong Passion Rooted in Southern Heritage
Horror is my religion. There hasn’t been a time in my life where horror has been there for me, whether it be through movies, shorts, books, and writing it. And Louisiana is the best place for me. I was born and live here. I am a Southern horror fan that is always looking for the next big high. And hoping I am it for someone else.
