How Two Events Sparked the Creation of Broken Chair
My Inspiration Two events occurring in the same week led me to write this book. I’ve written for decades, but rarely do I write poetry until, while out on a walk one day, the poem Broken Chair started to form. I pictured a little girl sitting on the step while her mother toiled away in the basement repairing a broken chair.
From Personal Trauma to Poetic Inspiration: The Birth of Broken Chair
The woman found her self-worth in bringing new life to old furniture. However, because of her childhood trauma she found herself unable to show her emotions. So as the small child watched, the poem took form. A few days later, my brother called and out of the blue said, did you know mom spelled her middle name with an H, Rhita. I said I didn’t know that. After the call, I got paper and pen and wrote the first 5 pages.
Targeting Historical Fiction Enthusiasts: Unintended Relevance and Broader Appeal
My Target Audience My original target audience was people who enjoy Historical Fiction. Then the pandemic hit! Then politicians in America started espousing the same things happening a hundred years ago. Broken Chair, like The Handmaid’s Tale is prescient. I had no idea! I also had no idea that men would love the book as much as women do.
Readers Take Away My fervent hope is that readers will see the parallels in their day to day life and threats to it. If history repeats, we’re living it now.
Expanding Horizons: Broken Chair‘s Success and Future Projects
Future Plans for Broken Chair I’ve sold somewhere over 2,000 copies including Kindle. Some of the readers I’ve spoken to said it would make a great movie or television series. I tried writing a screenplay but it’s not what I do. I’m also writing another book with two in the wings. So time!
Author Background: From Ottawa to Belleville and Beyond
About Me I was born in Ottawa Ontario, spent two years in Hong Kong BCC, working for an Import/Export company. Returned to Canada; met and married my husband. We have three children, lived on a farm for ten years. Moved to a village for 31 years, and retired to Belleville Ontario six years ago.
From Volunteer Work to Literary Success: Embracing the Spotlight
I am currently V.P. of Alltogether Affordable Housing Corp. and a member of Quinte Rainbow Refuge. In other words, I’m a human-doing. I’ve been writing for decades, but never considered publication until I gave the manuscript for Broken Chair to two friends, who encouraged me to publish it. I designed the cover and made all my own promotional material to take to book signings. The response has been far beyond my imagination. I presented to our local CanLit group of about 60 members. They said I was the best presenter they’d had in 19 years.
While I’m not a shy person, I’ve spent most of my life polishing other people’s buttons as they say. I’ve never been the center of attention, so all this positive reinforcement has had a very pleasant effect.
