What is your book all about? ‘Underwater Girl’ is a heartwarming Children’s story, brought to life with colorful illustrations by Christie Shinn.

‘Underwater Girl’ is a testament to the boundless wonders of childhood imagination and the power of embracing one’s unique abilities. Through Natty’s eyes, readers of all ages are immersed in a tale of friendship, bravery, and the limitless possibilities that lie within each of us.

This beautifully crafted narrative not only captures the magic of the ocean but also the magic that resides within us all. This book is a magical tale, something to bring the family together before bedtime, to read and exercise the power of imagination in the ocean and with the sea creatures.

What inspired the creation of your book?

In April, I embarked on a writing journey by participating in a writing contest for the American Cancer Society. I made a commitment to write for at least 30 minutes every day in May while also raising funds and awareness for this important organization.

Rather than waiting for May 1st to kickstart my writing efforts, I dived right in and began crafting poems and short stories, which is when the concept for ‘Underwater Girl’ took shape. It had long been a dream of mine to pen a comic story centered around a young girl who harbored the unique ability to hold her breath underwater like a Superhero, and I felt the time was right for it. I knew the story needed a talented illustrator, so I reached out to Christie Shinn who was a delight to work with.

Who is the intended audience for ‘Underwater Girl’?

‘Underwater Girl’ can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. It serves as an inspirational narrative that is particularly well-suited for young readers, parents, educators, and librarians who will find it both enjoyable and educational. The book comprises 38 pages adorned with vibrant illustrations that beautifully complement the engaging storyline. With its four chapters, ‘Underwater Girl’ caters to independent readers, typically aged between 8 and 12, with the themes of self-discovery, courage, and friendship that resonate with readers of all ages, making it a crossover book that appeals to the young child in us all in an underwater diving adventure alongside sea turtles, dolphins, and seahorses, allowing the imagination to wander freely, while providing a unique opportunity to disconnect, allowing you to unwind and immerse yourself in the pages of a book.

What are your desired takeaways for readers from your book?

My foremost hope is that readers thoroughly relish the book and discover the enchantment and potential it holds. I aspire for the story to significantly contribute to the growth of young readers and ignite their enduring love for reading. I aim to inspire these young minds to believe in themselves and have confidence in their own abilities. Ultimately, I want children to cultivate a lifelong passion for literature and storytelling, one that endures into their adulthood. I believe that reading ‘Underwater Girl’ can serve as a meaningful bonding experience for families, with the potential to bring together parents, grandparents, children, and more, creating lasting connections through the shared enjoyment of its pages.

What are your upcoming plans and goals for the book?

On November 11th, I’ll be at Barnes & Noble in Huntington Beach for the book release event. Additionally, I’m considering visits to several libraries for signings and readings after the holiday season. I’m eagerly anticipating the opportunity to introduce ‘Underwater Girl’ at the 10th Annual Bay Area Book Festival, marking my second year attending as an author. And something more about yourself. Over the past three decades, my work has graced the pages of more than 300 print publication issues including Rolling Stone, Billboard, and more. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing, photographing, and reviewing some of the most legendary and influential figures in live Music & Entertainment. In 1995, I finally fulfilled my dream of photographing The Ramones, and since then, every moment has felt like a delicious cherry on top of an already fulfilling career. Seeking a new adventure and a different perspective, I embarked on a unique path at the start of 2021, as a graveyard shift Crematory Operator, guiding those who once had beating hearts into the afterlife. ‘Underwater Girl’ marks my second release—of sharing compelling narratives with the world.
