What is your book all about?
In my novella Trainwreck Daughters, Valerie Wolfe, who has turned her life around by leaving sex work behind, faces a critical challenge when her old friend Justine calls for help. Justine has squandered a large sum of money from a dangerous man she claims to love and is at risk of serious harm.
Despite their falling out over Valerie’s departure from sex work, Valerie decides to assist Justine, but this means returning to the life she left behind. As Valerie dives back into the world of sex work, she confronts her own demons, struggles with addiction, and uncovers unsettling truths about her friend’s motives, all while grappling with her past and her own vulnerabilities.
What inspired you to write the book?
I was inspired to write this book through character development, which is how most of my ideas begin. I wanted to create a story set in the seedy underworld of sex work, focusing on two characters with contrasting emotional journeys.
One character starts with hatred and evolves into love, while the other begins with love and descends into hatred. Their opposing arcs intersect, creating a dynamic interplay between their personal transformations.
What is your target audience for the book?
The target audience for Trainwreck Daughters would include readers of contemporary fiction who are drawn to modern, real-life struggles and emotional complexity. It would appeal to fans of character-driven stories, particularly those interested in deep, evolving character arcs and psychological drama.
Additionally, the book would attract followers of social issues and realistic portrayals, especially regarding the darker aspects of society such as the sex work industry and personal redemption. Mystery and thriller enthusiasts might also be engaged by the tension and deception woven into the narrative.
Overall, the book is suited for readers who appreciate raw, emotional narratives and complex, flawed characters grappling with challenging situations.
What do you hope readers could get out from your book?
I hope readers find Trainwreck Daughters engaging and stimulating, even if the characters are deeply flawed. I aim for readers to connect with the humanity in these characters and find something relatable in their experiences.
Additionally, I want the book to provoke, unsettle, and disturb, as my favorite books are often provocative and unsettling. I’m definitely not the cozy-mystery type of writer—my goal is to have a powerful, thought-provoking impact.
What are your future goals/plans for the book?
My main goal right now is to promote the book and reach as many readers as possible, focusing on maximizing visibility and spreading the word. Meanwhile, I’m deep into editing my third project—a horror/thriller novel that I’m really excited about.
It’s finished, and I’m meticulously reviewing it to ensure it’s not embarrassing to send out (haha). Once I’ve polished it to the best of my ability, I plan to submit it to literary agents.
And something more about yourself.
I’m currently living in the beautiful city of Bellingham, Washington, with my wife, our cat, and two guinea pigs. I work for a hospice agency here, but when I’m not on the job, I’m obsessively writing and reading. I’m a big fan of crime stories and can’t get enough of Daniel Woodrell, Stephen King, and Andre Dubus III. I’m also drawn to the dark atmospheres of the Silent Hill and Life is Strange video game series. TV shows like Breaking Bad and True Detective, along with a good episode of Forensic Files, always catch my interest. I prefer stories—mine included—with a darker edge and a fascination for antiheroes, and I love delving into deeply flawed characters.
Outside of writing and reading, I visit my childhood home, play video games, and watch movies with my siblings. I drink too much coffee, am learning Portuguese, and cherish time spent with my wife. I’m also the author of LIMELIGHT, a mystery/thriller published by Moonshine Cove Publishing on February 20, 2023.
