The Twisted Fates: Unearthly Lessons in Darkness
Venture into the realm of the mysterious and macabre, with The Twisted Fates: Unearthly Lessons in Darkness, a heartwarming collection of supernatural and horror short stories that promise to both terrify and inspire.
From wolves in sheep’s clothing, to whispers in haunted halls, The Twisted Fates steers you to chilling and spellbinding landscapes. But, as the darkness envelops you, glimmers of redemption peek through. It is here, within this delicate balance, that the characters-and perhaps you dear readers, encounter revelations that challenge and uplift the spirit.
What is your book about?
Firstly, thank you so much for having me on Authors’ Lounge! My book, The Twisted Fates: Unearthly Lessons in Darkness, is a collection of short, supernatural and horror stories. Plunge into eerie tales of haunted homes, and lurking killers, as hope flickers in the shadows. Akin to shows like Cabinet of Horrors, or The Twilight Zone, it’s a chilling, wondrous journey. Enter if you dare!
Some of the stories in The Twisted Fates transport the reader into mystical settings, and others are every day – but eerie, with the line between the natural and supernatural becoming blurred. As characters confront spine-tingling situations, moral quandaries or otherworldly entities, there’s an examination of the duality of human nature, and the potential that we all have for redemption in the face of darkness. I’d like to think it’s a compelling read for those intrigued by the macabre and the mysterious.
What inspired you to write the book?
The inspiration for the stories in The Twisted Fates, came from various places. Some of them were literally dreamed up! It’s not unusual for me to wake up at around 3am, having just dreamt a complete story. These dreams are vivid, and I wake up with the entire plot fresh in my mind. That’s why I always keep my mobile phone beside my bed, so I can quickly jot down everything in my notes app. If I don’t do that, I’ll go back to sleep, and the dream just evaporates by the morning when I wake again.
Other stories come about in a different way. For example, my short story Trees Have Ears, was inspired by a defence mechanism some plants have that I read about. Discoveries like these often spark my imagination, hitting the ‘what if’ button in my brain. It’s moments like this that blend the real and the surreal, giving birth to stories that are a mixture of hopeful and unsettling.
What is your target audience for the book?
My ideal reader is someone who likes to read about the scary or macabre, but also enjoys rooting for the underdog, and likes a whisper of light amongst the darkness. The Twisted Fates, is a collection of short stories and sits at around 100 pages, so it’s ideal for someone who’s looking for a quick read, or those who have a busy life, and want a book you can put down and pick back up again frequently.
What do you hope your readers could get from your book?
I hope that readers of The Twisted Fates experience a unique journey through the diverse worlds of each story. My aim is for the reader to enjoy the intersection of fear and revelation, and to feel the thrill of the unexpected. Every story in the collection whether born from a 3am dream, or from a scientific article, blends the intriguing and the disturbing. I’d like the stories in The Twisted Fates: Unearthly Lessons in Darkness, to stay with the reader long after they turn the final page.
What are your future goals/plans for your books?
In the long-term, I plan to expand The Twisted Fates series, delving deeper into the themes of psychological complexity and the supernatural. However, my immediate focus is on the next book in my Mary Jameson Supernatural Thriller Series: Psychic Echoes. As a result, I’ve put subsequent books in The Twisted Fates series temporarily on hold. This decision allows me to fully develop the sequel to Psychic Voices in a way that resonates with the reader.
Ultimately, as a writer, my goal is to continually challenge myself in new and exciting ways, and to craft stories that are thought provoking, and create a long-lasting impression with the reader. Whether that’s through the unexpected plots of The Twisted Fates: Unearthly Lessons in Darkness, or the suspenseful twists of the Mary Jameson Supernatural Thriller Series, my goal remains the same, to deliver thought-provoking and entertaining tales that resonate and linger in the minds of my readers.
A bit about JP Alters…
Balancing life as a mum of three teenagers, I draw strength and inspiration from my rich Jamaican/English heritage, a blend I hold close to my heart. My love affair with literature began very early; I remember crafting my first poem as a child, a passion that was recognized when my poem The Swan (at least that’s how I remember the title,) won a borough-wide competition during my primary school years.
My weekdays are a whirlwind of meaningful commitments. I split my time between mentoring, and contributing to a local homeless project, roles that both challenge and fulfil me. Come the evenings and weekends, I wear many hats: a chef, a taxi service for my busy teens, and sometimes, when the stars align and quiet moments are found, I embrace the cherished role of being an author. It’s in these stolen moments that I weave my tales, and share part of myself with my readers.
