Shelters by Jesus, The Story Continues by Pastor Richard Berry follows after the words of Christ, advocating for charity and kindness, especially for those who struggle.
Throughout the Gospels, we witness Christ’s profound compassion for the marginalized and the downtrodden, especially for the homeless. His actions and teachings offer a powerful example for Christians today. It is a call to follow in his footsteps and continue his mission of love and service.
- In Luke 5:12-14, Christ encounters a leper who was ostracized because of a contagious illness. Instead of turning away, Christ reaches out and heals him. He demonstrates his disregard for societal norms and his unwavering compassion for the suffering.
- In Matthew 14:15-21, Christ miraculously multiplies some bread and fish to feed a large crowd of hungry people. Many of them were likely homeless and living in poverty. This act highlights his concern for the physical well-being of the most vulnerable members of society.
- In Luke 15:1-2, Christ is criticized for associating with tax collectors and sinners, groups considered unclean and ostracized by the religious elite. However, Christ chose to spend time with these marginalized individuals, demonstrating his acceptance and love for all people, regardless of their social status.
- In Luke 10:25-37, Christ tells the story of a Samaritan who helps a wounded traveler, whom both a priest and a Levite had ignored. This parable challenges the prevailing prejudices of the time and emphasizes the importance of showing compassion to those in need, regardless of their identity.
Continuing the Story of Christ
The teachings of Christ emphasize the importance of hospitality and service to those in need. He even declared that serving the hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, and imprisoned was equivalent to serving him. This powerful statement underscores the responsibility of Christians to care for the homeless and others who are struggling.
As such, so we can continue the story of Christ, we should follow his example and:
- Volunteer at homeless shelters, providing meals and clothing and offering companionship and support to those in need.
- Raise awareness about the issue of homelessness and advocate for policies that promote affordable housing, access to healthcare, and other essential services.
- Build personal relationships with homeless individuals, listening to their stories, acknowledging their dignity, and treating them with respect.
- Donate to organizations that provide assistance to the homeless or contribute to programs that directly strike at the roots of poverty.
- Work alongside individuals and organizations of other faiths to provide comprehensive support and services to the homeless.
Following Christ’s example requires a commitment to action. It is not enough to simply feel compassion for the homeless; we must also translate that compassion into tangible expressions of love and service. By following in Christ’s footsteps, we can help to create a more just and compassionate world where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Let us continue the story of Christ.
A Roof Over the Homeless
Christ’s life and ministry offer a powerful inspiration for Christians to embrace compassion and service, especially towards the homeless. Through his example, we are able to create a better and more just world. Let us work towards and realize a society where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
