Staying the Course

Healing Through Understanding and Expression

“Staying the Course: A Story about Trauma, Healing, and Finding My Voice in the Middle of Silence” is a children’s book that delves into the impact of trauma and the transformative journey of healing. The story follows a young protagonist who struggles with emotional challenges stemming from trauma but eventually learns how to understand, express, and process those feelings. This book offers a safe and relatable space for children to explore their emotions and start their healing journey, while also being a helpful resource for parents, educators, and mental health professionals supporting children through trauma.

A Mission Rooted in Personal and Professional Experience

The inspiration for Staying the Course comes from my personal experiences with trauma, as well as my professional work as a social worker. I have seen many children who struggle to understand or express their feelings after experiencing trauma, often feeling isolated. Writing this book was my way of creating a resource that could help children feel heard and empowered to begin the healing process. It’s also my personal mission to encourage children to speak up, seek help, and understand that healing is possible, no matter how challenging it may seem.

A Resource for Healing and Connection

The primary audience for Staying the Course is children, particularly those who have experienced trauma or emotional struggles. It provides a gentle, reassuring way for them to connect with the protagonist’s journey and understand that they are not alone in their feelings.

The book is also aimed at parents, caregivers, educators, and mental health professionals who support children. It serves as a tool for fostering conversations about trauma, emotional health, and healing. It can be used in schools, counseling settings, or homes to help children express and process their emotions in a safe, supportive environment.

Empowering Children and Guiding Adults

For children, I hope Staying the Course offers comfort, validation, and a sense of empowerment. I want them to understand that it’s okay to feel difficult emotions and that they don’t have to carry those feelings alone. The book encourages children to speak up and ask for help, emphasizing that healing is a journey, but it is one they can begin with the support of others.

For adults, I hope the book provides insight into how trauma affects children and the best ways to support their healing process. I want parents, caregivers, and educators to gain the tools and empathy needed to help children navigate their emotional challenges with compassion and understanding.

Expanding the Journey of Healing and Hope

In the future, I plan to expand on Staying the Course by creating additional resources like a companion journal and a coloring book. These interactive tools will provide children with a creative outlet to process their emotions and deepen their connection to the book’s themes of healing and self-expression.

I also aim to host workshops, readings, and community events to spread awareness of the book and its message of hope and resilience. I hope to bring Staying the Course into schools, libraries, and therapy settings, helping children who are experiencing trauma feel supported and understood.
