For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift – not from works, so that no one can boast.
This verse is from Ephesians 2:8-9, which details how humanity attains salvation and how it can be quite contradictory to what most may believe in. When it comes to salvation, people think they can do so through the good deeds they wholeheartedly devote their lives to. It’s the sentiment typically taught at school or in churches. People who constantly do good have better chances of being guided to and receiving a spot in God’s Kingdom.
However, Ephesians and a few other verses in the Bible point humanity toward a different means of attaining salvation, and that is through grace alone.
What Is Salvation?
In its simplest definition, salvation means to be delivered from peril. It’s being saved from the consequences of their bad decisions and sins. From this definition, it can be easy to associate salvation with what people are willing to do to alleviate themselves from their wrongdoings. It’s what they’re willing to sacrifice and compromise in order to start a new slate in the eyes of their creator.
Salvation is necessary because humans are corrupted.
People are born sinners, and salvation is God’s greatest work, given to humanity through forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. It is the process of reuniting people with God, piecing them back to who gave them life, and allowing them to be reunited with his holiness in purity and righteousness.
The very definition of salvation and what it saves humanity from has long been established. However, what they must do to be saved is often still a subject of scrutiny.
The Role of Faith in Salvation
In the last chapters of his second book, which introduce the ideology he’ll tackle in his third, The Land of the Promise, Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets mentions “saved by grace alone.” The author highlights how the concept has prevalently appeared in the Bible, influencing people’s beliefs in society to this day. The sentiment’s repeated nature throughout the Bible proves the significant role of faith in salvation.

When God says humanity will be saved by grace alone, He emphasizes that effort will never be enough for them to earn salvation. The role of faith in salvation allows people to be saved because of the work of Christ within them. Salvation isn’t about obeying do’s and don’ts.
Instead, it’s about being faithful to Christ. It only occurs when God has declared people righteous for Christ’s sake.
Salvation is a crucial process of saving oneself from eternal damnation. The role of faith in salvation serves as the process’ foundation. It’s the central tenet of religions, a critical component measuring how easy it is to save people from the consequences of their behaviors.
However, the existence of faith doesn’t justify their wrongdoings. The role of faith in salvation doesn’t signify that if they continue believing in spiritual truths, their
redemption is certain. Instead, the absolute belief in a higher power enforces them to be righteous and foster a healthy and close relationship with God.
Why Is Faith Important in Our Salvation?
One way of understanding the role of faith in salvation is by imagining it to be on the other side of a cliff. Humanity can’t cross over on its own. In reality, this encompasses the shortcomings and sinful nature they’re born into. Salvation isn’t a matter they’re automatically given. Instead, it’s something they must work hard for. Fortunately, God doesn’t let them suffer.
He offers a bridge to help them get across. This bridge reflects the grace He gives them the moment they’re born. It’s something He wholeheartedly hands in order to guide them toward where He wants humanity to be. What is the role of faith in this equation?
Faith encourages people to take the first step onto thebridge, trusting its integrity to keep them safe. Faith is the belief that they’ll cross without being wounded, regardless of how uncertain their situation is. Hence, the role of faith in salvation isn’t highlighted in how forgiving God is to humanity. Instead, their belief and trust in Him empowers them to do good and serve in His name.
