Most people are naturally resistant to change, especially when others impose it upon them. Attempts to do so defy the inherent laws of human nature and lead to negative effects. For instance, they could be defensive or resentful and use that feeling to reinforce their destructive behaviors. Even if you succeed in changing someone, genuine, lasting change has to come from within. External pressure to change rarely leads to deep transformations in a person.
