Creating children’s books is what Pamela C. Rice enjoys, and since 2015 she has released 24 books. Each book is warmly illustrated by Rice and offers written artistic expression of her childhood experiences and inspirations that children will find fun, imaginative, and educational. She is currently working on translating and bringing more diversity and inclusion to her library of books.
Carlisle’s Trumpet is a story of a young boy who loves playing his trumpet. He is not short of finding an audience. He entertains the farm animals as a way of getting some reaction for his efforts as well as his neighbors. He loves playing outside because it is a grander stage. Carlisle desires more, and soon he gets that opportunity.
My inspiration for Carlisle’s Trumpet were the neighbors I had during my childhood. Carlisle’s brother would play his trumpet in the summertime, from the second floor balcony outside his bedroom. The sound would draw neighbors to their windows and to the outside of their homes.
The story is aimed at children who play and study music and to encourage them to study and practice because there is an audience for them. Persistence has its rewards. This book has been offered in many FREE promotions to get it circulated to as many who are willing to read it.
Initially, I was just illustrating for various writers. I did this for many years. Realizing that I had so many stories of my own, I began to create my own books. After my first book ‘Aaron’s Dream’, the flood-gates were opened. When asked which part of the production I enjoy the most, I had to say illustrating…that’s the easy part and my favorite, because my life’s work has been art, graphics, advertising design, and visual communications
When I’m creating a story, my mind automatically jumps to the visual. I believe that the visuals drive the story—for me.
I have to write stories that are meaningful…stories children can relate to ‘from a child’s perspective’. Some children’s books can be too simple and trifling. My stories can be read and enjoyed by adults because I weave in ‘life lessons.’ Because ideas come to me in pieces, I have to thread those pieces together, so the books eventually flow together. If that doesn’t happen, I usually ‘can’ the book OR just put it to the side.
I grew up surrounded by creative art and design and believe that I am a person born to write and illustrate for children. My father was in the field of design and illustration. With a well-decorated independent and corporate experience in advertising, graphic design, and visual communications, I have earned high recognitions and top accolades with over 40 design awards. I’ve made guest appearances as a lecturer at the Illinois Academy of Design and Merchandising and at Northeastern Illinois University. I’ve also taught at the University of Illinois-Chicago, in the Principal Scholar’s Program, and at Alverno College in Wisconsin.
I have illustrated for various authors for many years developing my unique illustrative style. I am currently working on translating and bringing more diversity and inclusion to my library of books.
I haven’t performed any book readings. Marketing, yes. A few Podcasts, no touring. I’ve been asked to get involved with some book fairs, but I am not one to set up, sit around, and personally sell books. My ‘library’ has grown and selling and promoting a variety of books appeals to me more than just hitting the circuit with just one book. I’ve done the whole ‘exhibit‘ thing with my paintings. I have had several one-woman shows with my art and have been to four galleries (Wisconsin, Chicago, Michigan) For right now, my books have been on the ‘organic’ sale. Websites, Social Media, local stores. I guess, in a way, I still see it as a hobby.
