WAR IN UKRAINE

WAR IN UKRAINE

Underwater by Alex Kolis

Imagine living your ordinary, measured life with a lovely home, a job, a family, and a beloved dog. Everything seems perfect, and you couldn’t ask for more. But one day, the world around you shatters into chaos. You wake up to an ear-splitting explosion, and panic ensues as people are left bewildered. The news broadcasts reveal the horrifying truth: your city has been invaded by aliens. Looking out the window, you see them—green humanoid figures armed with weapons and frightening war machines. You’re surrounded, trapped, and unable to escape. The shops are closed, venturing outside is perilous, currency becomes useless, the internet and mobile networks are down. Your city becomes a battleground, and the battles rage on relentlessly.

Sleep is elusive, normal life becomes an unattainable luxury, and the constant fear for your life becomes your reality. Yet, you are still at home, surviving amid the madness. Can you imagine anything worse? Unfortunately, there is something worse—when a war-damaged dam of a hydroelectric power plant floods the remnants of your former life.

But this is not the plot of a scary movie; it is a real-life story of people, brought to life in this captivating book, that vividly captures the atmosphere of the conflict, shattered lives, and tragedies of those caught in the whirlwind that began upon the fateful day of February 24, 2022.

In this book, I share the difficult experiences of my dear friend who found himself and his loved ones caught in the maelstrom of events following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This is an authentic account that vividly portrays the atmosphere within the conflict, the precariousness of life, and the tragedies of those ensnared in the madness of war.

In this narrative, I recount the immense hardships faced by the civilian population during the war: their struggle for survival amid constant shelling, lack of electricity and communication, scarcity of food, and absence of medical aid. And just when it seemed that circumstances couldn’t worsen, June 6, 2023, became a testament to the harsh reality. The sudden destruction of the river dam washed away the remnants of their former lives with a powerful force, sparing no one.

In the lives of people, the aftermath of war leaves scars that may never fully heal. This book portrays the heavy moments of loss as well as the unyielding spirit of those who resiliently navigate unimaginable circumstances, along with the love that has found its way, offering a glimmer of hope and happiness amidst the shadows of dark and tumultuous times.

This isn’t just a work of fiction; it’s a stark reminder of the real-life consequences of conflict. The book immerses you in the harsh reality that countless innocent people have endured in war-torn regions throughout history. It serves as a poignant reminder that wars are not merely battles between nations, but tragedies that destroy lives, homes, and dreams.

In a world that often seems to prioritize conflicts and divisions, this book is a powerful plea for empathy, unity, and compassion. It stands as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the unyielding will to survive and rebuild even amidst the darkest times.

As you turn the last page, you’ll be left pondering the fragile nature of peace and the significance of cherishing what we hold dear. This book is more than just a story—it’s a call to action, urging us all to strive for a world where such tragedies can never take place again.
