They can move your emotions with words known to you but arranged in different structures and approaches. Being with book enthusiasts unleashes a more creative, brilliant, articulate, open, welcoming, poetic, and vibrant you.

The ReadersMagnet Book Confab in Tribeca NYC on the last week of October revealed different stories, personalities, dreams, goals, emotions, and more. It’s a place where self-published authors speak their thoughts freely. It’s a haven where they share their stories without worrying about what others might think. It’s a place where you can be yourself and where books can have a voice.

Open Mic, Open Storytelling

The Book Confab provides a platform, a literal one, where authors can have an Open Mic. This is on top of having their books displayed, meeting and greeting co-authors, signing their books for fairgoers, and building a bigger network of independent authors. It is an author-centric event originally created by ReadersMagnet, a finalist of the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics 2022.

Storytelling is the best skill an author has. The Open Mic sessions allow authors to retell, reminisce, and recall the experiences behind the stories of their books. It reveals their humanity. It unveils pain, courage, hope, faith, success, failure, and every single experience a human can have. It inspires, encourages, empowers, enlightens, entertains, and invigorates the audience. As such, the authors are excited to take turns, get the mic, and enjoy the freedom to speak.

Author Speaks, Book Talks

Aside from an Open Mic where authors speak, a #BookTok session was also organized to let the printed words speak for themselves. BookTok is a combination of books and TikTok. Yes, it is a virtual platform where short videos can be downloaded using the #BookTok hashtag to reach a community of book lovers. As of this writing, there are already about 91.1 billion views for that hashtag on TikTok.

During this segment, an author, a fairgoer, or a companion of the author can read excerpts from the book. It can be read dramatically, poetically, expressively, or however the reader would want to present the printed words to life. A camera was prepared to capture the moment and share it, not only on TikTok but also on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. It is important to note, though, that social media sites are not created equal. For instance, Twitter doesn’t allow uploading videos for more than two minutes.

Indie authors yearn to find platforms to speak, places to expose themselves, and various means to be heard. The ReadersMagnet Book Confab in Tribeca offered what they desired and look forward to experiencing the same event again.
