• In today’s world, where misinformation and fake news are all over the place, it’s a journalist’s job to go on a crusade against them. When what is true can easily be fabricated, it is essential that trustworthy journalists exist to keep the wool off people’s eyes. 
• Of course, these journalists have to be trained thoroughly on how to spot and effectively counter misinformation while being held to a very rigorous and strict set of standards. Society would not benefit if anyone could just call themselves a journalist.
• In an ostensibly democratic society, journalists are needed because they serve as reliable watchdogs, always on the lookout for signs and evidence of corruption. Any wrongdoing and abuse of power from elected officials, government agents, or private individuals can only be uncovered if there exists a robust and efficient network of journalists and information providers. Without the presence of journalists, those in power would be free to do whatever they want without fear of repercussion–and it is essential to a democracy’s functioning that the people in power should always be afraid of getting found out.
• By promoting the importance of journalists and their adventures, society is also implicitly advocating for the significance of transparency and accountability as necessary values. Through the validation and publication of their findings, journalists help to push for a more informed and engaged populace since people are more likely to act when adequate information is laid out and delivered properly. An aware public can better steer their officials into making better decisions that provide for the whole rather than the most powerful few.
• Journalists also provide a voice or a platform for the ostracized and marginalized of the community. All over the world, journalists are on the frontlines, playing critical roles in bringing issues of police brutality, environmental degradation, and social justice to light.
