This work highlights the resilience and determination of minorities in Eastern North Carolina as they overcame significant obstacles to build their businesses during the Jim Crow era. I am currently seeking speaking engagements to share these stories and connect with audiences interested in a powerful narrative of perseverance and community strength. Honoring the Legacy That Guides Our Future
I wrote Ruffin Brothers to honor the legacy of Black men and women who worked tirelessly, uplifted communities, and lived with purpose and faith. As we focus on building our future, we risk losing sight of our past, but we must remember where we came from. Our history holds the strength, resilience, and faith that have carried us this far. By recognizing our roots, we not only preserve our heritage but also empower the next generation to rise even higher, never forgetting how far God has brought us.
A Tribute to Resilience Amid Racial Injustice
What inspired me to write about my grandfather and his family’s struggles was his resilience in the face of deep-seated racial injustice. As a minority in a rural North Carolina town dominated by white supremacy, he faced constant opposition. His drive to build a thriving business faced resistance, especially from white residents wary of his strong Negro community support. I remember my family’s trials and triumphs vividly. I share them to honor their legacy and connect with others who persevered.
Sharing America’s Full Story Across Generations
My target audience ranges from youth to elders—approximately ages 11 to 100. I believe young people must learn America’s full history—the good, bad, and ugly—because it is our shared story. This history is united, belonging to all of us as we live together in the same world.
Witnessing Hope and Courage in Jim Crow America
I hope readers, especially young people, will come away with a vivid understanding of what life was truly like in Jim Crow America. Minorities’ daily struggles under the lingering mindset of the Old South should be pictured vividly. Hope and resilience that endured despite injustice and fear should also be witnessed. My grandfather’s story proves that with faith in God and belief in possibilities, courage and perseverance can overcome racial inequality.
Bringing Ruffin Brothers to Life on Screen
My future goal for this book is to secure sponsorship to fund a professionally produced book trailer. This preview showcases the story’s most powerful moments, crafted to capture attention and spark audience interest. Ultimately, I hope this project will pave the way for a full-length film adaptation of Ruffin Brothers.
Preserving History and the Spirit of African American Songs
I am a retired Media Specialist, what we once called a “Librarian.” I value modern technology’s conveniences, yet nothing compares to opening a book and immersing myself in its stories. For me, history is essential, and African American Spirituals are a vital part of that history. They should be preserved and celebrated, which is why many of these songs are included in my book. We sang them when we were young, but this rich cultural tradition is fading and must be revived.
