“My parents took me to different places, hoping for a solution to the problem. I was a very sick baby, and the doctors did not give my parents much hope that I would survive. Mommy and Daddy were told I might die, and if I lived, I would be an invalid and not be able to do anything. In 1959, they took me to a famous brain doctor – Dr. Cooper – on Park Avenue. Mommy took me to him to see if he could do anything. He thought I might be having petit mal seizures. This was never confirmed, and eventually, I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. I did not talk for a long time and could not walk. I crawled about using my elbows and pulling my legs behind me.”
“I still could not walk. I still couldn’t do anything. They gave me crutches and braces but never taught me how to use them. The braces were too darn heavy; I could not even stand with them, let alone walk. At the hospital, I had been trying to walk between parallel bars. My father made a frame like that for me, so I would “walk up and down, up and down.” If Frankie could walk, then I would too!”
“Pope Francis came to Madison Square Garden in 2015. They were to say the rosary. Again, I was chosen to be part of it. I started it off by saying the Apostle’s Creed. I was close to the pope but did not talk to him. After all, I had had my turn to meet Pope John Paul II, who is now a saint. How can I be so blessed?”
