Janis Latimore is a poet and former public service worker with a deep love for seeing children grow up, as shown in her book Oh, Nigel is That You?

Born in Washington, D.C. to loving parents, Janis Latimore knows the importance of having a supportive family where children have the means to pursue life to its fullest. Her father had served in WW2, after which he and his family were stationed in France before moving back to America. Growing up, she was given all the means to pursue her calling, from high school to college. She then went on to have a dynamic career in the humanities, writing op-ed articles on equality, learning the fine art of poetry, and more.

And even after that career’s conclusion, she continues to stay on top of civic duties in her community, assisting students and raising awareness of various social issues. Her poetry book, Oh, Nigel is That You? is her tribute to both the quality time spent with her nephew, as well as all families who enrich the lives of their children.

Oh, Nigel is That You?

The book combines poetry and child development ideas to tell the story of a little boy named Nigel. It covers the different stages of his life, from a feisty little toddler to a 12-year-old boy with big dreams.

Along the way, readers can learn about how he gradually grows and discovers all sorts of different passions to pursue (from learning French to playing music). It’s another children’s book that would go well with many others in the family library.

Excerpts:

Oh, Nigel was

a little tank

He bit

and pulled

He climbed

And yanked

Oh, Nigel

Is that you?

The book is just one of Janis’ many poetry passion projects as she has been honing her craft for decades. Using rhymes and verses for self-expression is something so deeply ingrained in her that she uses it to share all her thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Having spent a lot of time with her nephew, she got to see so many of his milestones and she could not help but write down what she saw and turn it all into poetry.

Likewise, she’s currently organizing an even bigger stash of poems in the hopes that she can publish them in the future. Books like Oh, Nigel is That You? is full of great examples of how even just a few, simple words can capture the most cherished moments in one’s life.

It also expresses her deeply held belief about the importance of families, and how parents need as much support from society to ensure every child grows up like Nigel. For the many readers who share these values, this little book will certainly resonate.

Takeaway

Alongside her work in the humanities, Janis Latimore also has extensive experience in the public service sector. Oh, Nigel is That You? is one of the many writings where she uses her expertise to point out the key role that supportive parents and happy households play in developing children.

It highlights the things that would prompt children to start taking interest in various subjects, or manifest their talents. Further along, the book demonstrates the role of education and other support systems when it comes to giving kids like Nigel a fair chance to thrive (not just merely survive).

And in doing so, she also demonstrates how poetry can be a positive force of change in the world. Parents can use the book to teach kids about what they can expect when they get older, all while also raising awareness about the kind of rights that families have in order to secure their future.

All of this is simply a part of her personal mission to use her talents in a way that leave lasting, positive messages for future generations. Having written so many things about so many events happening in America and around the world, Janis figured that her current publishing projects are just the sort of gift she wants to leave behind so that they can be of help to someone.
