“I”TISM – From An Autistic, To Autistics, Parents And Professionals

ITISM by Denny Moutinho

Pouring My Heart into Understanding Autism

In this book, I have poured the best of myself, much like the careful extraction of olive oil, to offer a drop of water to help extinguish the wildfire that autism represents in humanity.

What Is “I’TISM” About?

“I’TISM” is more than just a book; it’s a bridge between lived experiences and professional knowledge about autism. It offers a raw and personal perspective while providing actionable insights for parents, professionals, and autistics alike. This book is a roadmap for anyone seeking to understand autism, whether they are supporting someone diagnosed or navigating it themselves.

What Inspired Me to Write It?

My story is one of perseverance, self-discovery, and resilience. Diagnosed with autism at 47 years old, I spent decades grappling with challenges that I couldn’t fully understand.

The journey truly began with my son, Miguel, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. Watching his behavior and learning about his needs felt like looking into a mirror. His diagnosis prompted me to reflect on my own struggles, but it wasn’t enough to lead to my diagnosis immediately. It took a significant toll on my physical and mental health before I could get the answers I needed.

After experiencing consecutive episodes of facial paralysis, and undergoing countless imaging exams, blood tests, and a spinal fluid analysis—all of which came back normal—I was finally referred to psychological and psychiatric evaluations. Months of therapy and assessments, including the RAADS-R, Aspie Quiz, and detailed anamnesis, revealed that I was also on the autism spectrum, at a support level 2. This realization was life-changing, helping me understand the challenges I had faced and giving me the tools to embrace who I am.

As a father of two children—my 9-year-old son and my 6-year-old daughter, who is currently undergoing evaluation—I’ve also experienced the challenges of raising children on the spectrum. This dual perspective as both an autistic individual and a parent has given me unique insights into the importance of creating supportive environments for individuals and families alike.

Writing “I’TISM” was my way of turning years of suffering and misunderstanding into a resource that could help others navigate the journey of autism with compassion and confidence.

What I Hope Readers Will Gain

One of the core messages of “I’TISM” is the importance of addressing both genetic predispositions and environmental triggers that influence autism. While genetics play a significant role, environmental factors like stress, diet, and sensory overload can exacerbate challenges for autistic individuals. My goal is to educate readers on how to recognize these triggers and create environments that foster growth and understanding.

I hope that parents will learn to identify symptoms early, implement strategies to avoid crises, and embrace their child’s unique strengths. For professionals, this book offers practical advice on supporting autistic individuals in various settings, from classrooms to workplaces. And for autistics themselves, my message is one of empowerment: understanding yourself is the first step toward thriving in a world that often feels overwhelming.

My Future Plans for the Book

“I’TISM” is just the beginning. I envision a future where this book becomes part of a larger movement to promote autism awareness and acceptance. My plans include developing workshops and lectures to deepen the understanding of autism within communities, schools, and workplaces.

I also aim to collaborate with organizations and professionals to further refine the concepts in the book, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful. By sharing my personal experiences and lessons learned, I hope to inspire others to advocate for systemic changes that benefit the autistic community.

A Bit About Me

I am 47 years old and have spent more than two decades as a maintenance manager, driven by a passion for knowledge and excellence. My professional journey has taken me to China, France, and Fiji, where I gained valuable international experience and honed my problem-solving skills in challenging environments.

As someone diagnosed with autism later in life, I bring a unique perspective to the conversation. My late diagnosis helped me better understand my strengths and challenges, empowering me to advocate not only for myself but also for my children. My son’s diagnosis at age three served as a catalyst for this journey of discovery, while my daughter continues to inspire me to strive for a better world for all autistics.

Outside of my professional technologists industrial maintenance work, I am a lifelong learner, constantly seeking ways to improve myself and the lives of those around me. I believe that knowledge is the most powerful tool for creating meaningful change, and I am dedicated to using my experiences to make a positive impact.

I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to share my journey and insights through the Authors’ Lounge. This platform not only amplifies my voice but also fosters a community where stories like mine can inspire and empower others.
