Hi, I’m Author Mason Bushell

I’m from Norfolk in the UK. I’m am a lover of nature and spend a lot of my time in the wilds of Norfolk with my dog Lucy. I’m an avid archer who would never shoot an animal. I love to cook all manner of food, baking cakes is a particular passion. Writing has always been something I’ve enjoyed right from school. The joys of getting a title and having the opportunity to write a story for it were amazing. I have written a collection of books awaiting publication. I have a large collection of short stories, poems, and recipes on my website too.

What is my book all about?

Holly Ward Investigates – The Steam Train. Is a novella-sized toe-dip into the world of my special sleuth, Holly Ward. Thanks to her detective grandfather nurturing her, Holly grew to love solving puzzles and mysteries. As she becomes Head Waitress in her mother’s restaurant, she becomes embroiled in thrilling mysteries. With her footballer boyfriend Samuel and her grandfather alongside her, Holly seeks justice in her heartwarming and special way.

In this case, when Douglas Bassham approaches Holly about strange holes being dug in his garden, Holly just has to investigate. She soon finds herself emersed in the life of a steam train enthusiast. Her investigation brings about a life-and-death struggle for the truth. If she fails not only, could she be killed but the whole Bassham family may perish as well.

What inspired you to write the book?

In short – Holly did.
Many years ago, I began writing a short mystery for a newspaper competition. I got a fair way into the tale about DCI Derek Ward and found myself looking into a pair of icy-blue eyes. Those became the cheery face of a character not in Derek’s story. Anyway, I asked the young lady who she was and she introduced herself as Holly, Derek’s granddaughter. She had me take the weekend off work to chat with her and her mystery series was born.
The Steam Train came after a series of hard failures with my writing. Holly has a knack for appearing when I’m low and she had me write this one to get me going again.

What is your target audience for the book?

I feel Holly’s mysteries would suit anyone above the age of twelve who loves a cozy mystery. I see them for anyone who grew up on Nancy Drew/Famous Five type stories and wants a little more mystery and adventure.

What do you hope readers could get out from your book?

I hope readers who spend time with Holly enjoy her tales as much as I did writing them. If you allow, she’ll become your friend and give you a hug while you solve the mystery by her side.

What are your future goals/plans for the book?

The Steam Train is the first in a long line of Holly’s mysteries. I hope to begin self-publishing them all regularly with a plan of attracting a more professional publication in the future.

In closing

One of my biggest loves is short story writing for prompts. These bring me into a hundred worlds a month and allow me to explore every genre and writing style possible. There is no better way to enjoy writing and to hone your craft as well.

That’s a great interview and it’s good to see you back, Mason. I’m new to Holly, but I will be following her sleuthy style, after I finish The Steam Train. What an endearing character she is!
