Anthoney’s Return from Hell is what happens when you’re getting the hell out of Dodge and offered redemption from the Big G himself! There’s a reason the underworld’s not that sunny.

In most religions, hell is a place of eternal punishment. It’s often depicted as a place of fire and brimstone. Hell is where the evil and the wicked are sent after death to either be tormented or repent for their sins.

While there are plenty of hells from religion to religion, there are common themes that underpin them.

What the Hells Look Like

While we’ve talked about what hell looks like before, the most common depiction of the underworld (especially in the Western and Biblical view) is that it’s a dark and gloomy place where no light exists. It’s often described as an endless pit of fire and brimstone where intense flames and other forms of torture harrow and agonize the damned, the souls of the dead who sinned their lives.

Some hells, though, such as Helheim in Norse Mythology, are cold and dark places. Others are merely twisted and dreadful versions of Earth, like Kur from the Sumerians.

Getting the Hell Out of Dodge

This bears repeating: hell is a place of torment and suffering.

So, there are plenty of reasons why people (specifically souls) would want to escape from it. Obviously, if you’re in the underworld, you might want to avoid the pain and the suffering that you’re probably going to be inflicted with.

Part of the experience in hell—to torture you holistically—is to isolate souls and subject them to abject and destructive loneliness, which you might want to escape from.

Lastly, people might want to escape the underworld to be reunited with their loved ones who might be in heaven. Although it might be more difficult to get inside heaven than escape from hell, at least if you are getting the hell out of Dodge and succeeding, you’re halfway there.

In addition to what’s listed above, here are some other reasons why people want to escape the underworld:

  • To avoid God’s judgment;
  • To find peace and forgiveness and;
  • To escape from the demons.

When You’re in the Underworld

With so many conceptions of hell, there are also bound to be many ways to escape from it. Different beliefs have different methods. In some religions, the only way to escape the underworld is to repent, confess one’s sins, and accept God’s forgiveness. While in others, the underworld is more of a gauntlet where one must perform good deeds or undergo certain rituals to be released.

Ultimately, the question of whether or not hell is a real place is a matter of faith. However, even those who do not believe in an underworld can appreciate the lessons learned from the concept. Hell can be seen as a metaphor for the consequences of sin and the importance of living a moral life.

Concerned If You’re Getting the Hell Out?

If you are struggling with the fear of hell, there are many resources available to help you. Talk to a religious leader, a therapist, or a trusted friend or family member. You can also find helpful information online and in books.

It is important to note that there is no right way to escape the underworld (we don’t even know if it exists). The path to salvation is different for everyone. However, there are some general things that people can do to increase their chances of avoiding going to hell in the first place, such as:

  • Repent your sins
  • Accept God’s forgiveness
  • Live a moral life
  • Help others

Remember, you are not alone. Many people struggle with the fear of the underworld. There is help available, and you can overcome your fear.

Anthoney’s Return From Hell is a great story about what it’s like getting the hell out of Dodge and God Himself offering him redemption.
