The year 2022 will be a meaningful year for family caregiving in terms of opportunities, new models, and the move into the new normal.
As we enter another year into the pandemic, we hope to finally achieve herd immunity, rebuild our lives, and embrace the new normal. Family caregiving is one of the many exciting aspects we should look into this year. Caregiving in the new normal is definitely an essential discussion because caregivers are essential workers. We are still dealing with the pandemic, and the last two years have presented new challenges and changes. Despite the challenges, the year 2022 is looking great for family caregivers. New developments and opportunities in the caregiving industry and the lessons and strengths acquired during the height of the pandemic are some of the things we can expect this year.
Although the Covid-19 pandemic has altered the lives of almost everyone, including caregivers, it is without a doubt that it has produced some resilient and dynamic front-line caregivers.
The last two years have significantly changed family caregiving. Social distancing, the emergence of Covid-19 variants, vaccination, and other health protocols have forced family caregivers to adapt, innovate, and acquire new skills. Caregivers have learned to work longer shift schedules and limited and careful physical interactions with patients. This mindset is something that will be harnessed further moving forward. This year, we expect caregivers to upgrade their skill set further and be more dynamic in their work schedules.
Technology is another aspect that caregivers must master to meet future demands. Digital tools and equipment will play a significant role in helping family caregivers provide service, especially home care patients and those opting for homemaker assistance care. Since we are still dealing with the pandemic, caregivers are also expected to learn how to use COVID symptom screening tools, vaccination trackers, and contact tracing tools.
Caregivers are expected to welcome new policies, programs, and engagements to benefit them and the industry.
During the early months of the pandemic, we saw the essential role of family caregivers and the importance of supporting family caregivers. Assisting family caregivers is a cost-effective way to provide care to patients and, at the same time, ensure the safety of these patients against the Coronavirus. “Caregiving is a labor of love for many families across the United States. But it is also a challenge for families that are ill-equipped to care for loved ones with complex needs while juggling responsibilities in their own lives. In an unprecedented time fraught with challenges, states are exploring innovative strategies to strengthen support for family caregivers, part of the “essential workforce.” (https://www.healthaffairs.org/)
Efforts to further strengthen a state’s capacity to support family caregivers are also expected to highlight this year. This is in terms of increasing the workforce, skills training, facilities, and equipment and increasing the budget for the health care system. Innovations in homecare employment models beneficial for caregivers are also expected this year. Models that support the caregivers’ mental health, stable working conditions, and workload and schedules should welcome this year’s professional and volunteer caregivers.
These, along with public health funds, further recognition of the caregivers’ role in the medical industry, and other long-term significant changes in practices, compensation, and benefits will definitely be part of the year 2022 for family caregivers. Hopefully, these developments will usher in a bright future in the caregiving industry and help us move forward beyond these pandemic times.
