The Child of Gulag
Dr. Yuri Feynberg
About the Book
The Child of Gulag is a book by Dr. Yuri C. Feynberg. It is an autobiographical book that narrates Feynberg’s childhood in Siberia. Feynberg grew up in one of the prison camps for Stalin’s political prisoners. His mother worked as a medical doctor inside the labor camp for many years. Exposed to the daily lives of hardened criminals, political critics, and other enemies of the Soviet State, Yuri learned many things about the Gulag, Soviet Russia’s Penal System. The book also narrates how this unique childhood experience has shaped young Yuri’s principles in life. The realities he witness inside the camp and among its prisoners left a lasting impression that would later enable Yuri to survive and even excel in the Soviet Special Forces, survive prosecution, and other traumatic experiences during the aftermath of the Second World War. Yuri Feynberg’s The Child of Gulag is not only a recording of an individual experience during one of Europe’s darkest times, but also a closer look at the Soviet Penal System through the eyes of an innocent child. It is for that reason that this book is a must read not only for students of history but also for those who want to understand Soviet Russia during its more turbulent and interesting times.

Knowing that what I’m reading was a perspective from a then-innocent child was very heartbreaking.
It was really quite unsettling reading the book with this in mind.
