Oscar the Mighty Crab
Oscar the Might Crab is a children’s illustrated book by Penny Higgins. It was published in 2018. The story follows a young crab named Oscar who lives in the ocean bay. Despite being a dull place, the bay is also home to Oscar’s uncles, aunts, numerous cousins, his parents, and his best friend, Crusty Tom. For quite some time now, Oscar has been thinking of exploring the surface or “the upper world” despite Tom’s advice to stay in their haven. Oscar often rides to the big upper world, dreaming he could stay but is always hurled back out in the bay.
The surface has always excited Oscar. Every time Oscar goes out to the surface, he encounters new things and wonderful discoveries. Some of the things that fascinated Oscar are the amusement rides and the carnival. He has never seen anything like it in the underworld. To him, the ocean bay is drab with just his family and cousins to see. Oscar yearns for adventure and being able to enjoy what others are enjoying in the “upper world” where the lights are bright, and
there is color everywhere.
“Oscar, the Mighty Crab follows young Oscar on his way to a wonderful discovery—the surface world. On his journey, he and some friends experience the excitement of a carnival and its amusement rides. At the surface, what splendor! Oscar considers staying, but his best friend, Crusty Tom advises him to stay home where he is safe and loved by his Mom and Dad.
Channeling the curious minds of the little ones, Higgins truly brings a treat in Oscar, the Mighty Crab. With this quick underwater adventure, young readers will surely have their curious and imaginative minds tickled at every turn of the page!” (excerpt from book description)
Aside from Oscar the Mighty Crab, Penny Higgins also wrote and published another children’s illustrated book entitled The Jiger and the Tiraffe, released in 2011. It features a poem about the amazing origins of tigers and giraffes coupled. The book also shares a strong message for young readers that everyone is a special child of God.
In 2010, she also published the book There’s a Bear in My Bed. It is another children’s book which contains 24-pages and is designed for readers ages 5 to 6 years old.
