Ovarian cancer is defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a group of diseases that originates in the ovaries or the related areas of the fallopian tubes and the peritoneum. Ovarian Cancer is the deadliest of gynecologic cancers and accounts for 2.5 percent of cancers in women. Last year, The American Cancer Society estimated about 21,750 new cases of ovarian cancer would be diagnosed. Around 13,940 women are expected to die of ovarian cancer in the United States within that said figure. Today’s book feature is about one woman’s journey and struggles with Ovarian cancer. My Wonderful Nightmare: Spiritual Journals Inspired by Cancer

My Wonderful Nightmare: Spiritual Journals Inspired by Cancer is a memoir by Erin Higgins co-authored by Alma Lightbody (author of the book You’re Not the Boss of Me). In this inspiring tale of one woman’s dance with Ovarian cancer, readers will get a glimpse of the struggle, anxiety, helplessness, and transformation that patients have to undergo.

My Wonderful Nightmare narrates how a shocking diagnosis of Ovarian cancer forces the young Erin to question her life and purpose in life. She was only thirty-one years old when the life-changing news dawned on her. Determined to make the most of her life, Erin begins to share her heart and soul through writing journals. These journals, which guide her during her most difficult moments, have helped and taught others. Today, it is a book of inspiration for those with Ovarian cancer and all women who are struggling with something.

“Her research, studies, and practical experiences are revealed in detail to enable everyone to learn what she learns, especially about “listening to your body” Erin chronicles her experiences with conventional and alternative healing and wellness treatments and tells us what works for her and what doesn’t.” (excerpt from book description)

My Wonderful Nightmare details Erin’s experiences, treatments, and feelings as her body changes and the disease slowly take a toll on her physically, emotionally, and mentally. Erin still manages to share wisdom, faith, and hope through her journals despite all these challenges. As her body begins to deteriorate, Erin begins to embrace the last part of her journey and accepts the reality of dying. Erin’s honesty and exceptional courage shine through even when choosing how and when to die.

The second part of Erin’s remarkable memoir reveals stories from friends and family about Erin’s process after death and how she ‘bridges’ the two worlds through metaphysical forms of communication. These interviews complete the circle and leave us with a page of insights: What would Erin say?
