So Much to Give and Other Works by Carlton Randolph Crane

In 1996, Carlton Crane published his debut novel, So Much To Give: A Story of America’s Greatest Generation. It is a family saga set against the backdrop of the Great Depression. In his book, Crane highlights the Depression of the 1930s as not only an American Depression but rather a world depression where many nations across the globe embrace various forms of government such as Fascism, Communism, Nazi, Dictatorship, Imperialism, and various forms of socialist states.

When the Second World War erupted, many united to push back the Nazis and Fascism. Many lives were lost and families displaced and the period became known as one of the darkest in human history. Yet despite the economic crisis and a war that left too many wounds, American went on to strive and help rebuild the Great American nation. In the middle of this is the Collie Family. So Much to Give is a story of how a small family from the small East Texas town of Coalville endured the hard times in America. The saga narrates how they persevered against hatred, racism, murder, and personal tragedy and sacrificed to rise and become part of America’s Greatest Generation.

Twenty-five years later, Carlton Crane published the semi-sequel of his debut novel. In December 2020, he released Time Enough to Cry: The Children of the Greatest Generation. The follow-up novel can also be read as a standalone narrative. The story centers on the three children born to the main characters in Carlton’s first book. Fast forward to today, the book narrates how the children of the Greatest Generation grew up during the fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties. Carlton takes the readers through all the characters growing up, their heartaches, tragedies, happiness, and finally, their love.

The book highlights how three women from vastly different walks of life meet three men during the height of the Vietnam War from 1968 through 1970. These young souls witnessed hardships and death and persevered. Time Enough to Cry: The Children of the Greatest Generation is also a narrative that would show how their honor, devotion, loyalty, courage, and dedication would see them through and eventually bring love to each of them. These six individuals would form a life-lasting bond of brotherhood and sisterhood forged by the horrors of war and be called the children of the greatest generation.
