I would like to thank the Author’s Lounge, for putting a face with the hard work.

Black Girl (a poem, an intro to me)

Not from royalty, no silver spoon at my birth- bumpy, roads hard and good times met me. Some of my loved ones have said goodbye to life.  But here I am, still here, pushed to the side, not chosen in a crowd. No matter how I screamed, “pick me!” out loud.

No one cares about that snub nose, short hair black girl-

Hum, my mom was black and my dad too- As a part of my mom and dad, my sisters and brothers, are a beautiful bouquet of shades of black. So I stem from a family, like that.  Not a bronze chic, or tented by the sun- Just a black girl created by God and born from my mom and dad.  Not from Mexico, or Germany, though my name might be-listen, if you uproot a Sycamore tree from its home and plant it in East Africa, would it still be a Sycamore Tree? Just saying, my name is Dirdura, pronounced Dil-tura, that’s me, not Diddo, or Deidara.

But I’m not angry, this is true; I celebrate me and you celebrate you.

Now come with me to a land of make believe, where The very Hungry Bear gets to learn self-control, and in Spider’s New Friend, kindness is a superpower.

These books teach children valuable skills. The Very Hungry Bear had to learn that she could not take food that belonged to another family because she was hungry.

In Spider’s New friend, Spider learns that kindness is a superpower. Children need the skills that are exposed in these books.

I am the 7th of 8 children. My parents and 3 siblings have passed away. I was born in Mobile, Alabama and grew up in Beaumont, Texas, I moved to Dallas in 1985 and married in 1988.  I live in Mesquite, Tx.  At first with my husband David and 6 children. Three of my children are in college, one is in graduate school, and 2 are in high school.

I started teaching infants and young toddlers in bible class. In 1986-2003, I developed and sharpened my teaching and song writing skills and assisted in Vacation Bible School. About 2004 I began teaching 6th grade bible class. Since COVID, I have developed and sharpened another skill, how to teach on Zoom.  I now share the teaching platform, not with just 2 teachers but a host of teachers for the 4th-6th grade class at The Greenville Ave. Church of Christ, in Richardson, Texas. I have been writing for 30 years, poems and spiritual songs were what I wrote first. I composed personal poems upon request or order, and sold them through consignment stores or by request.

One poem was published in an Anthology, “The Kenya Cloth ” The Cycle, but it looks different now, because I revised it, in my book, Inspiritual Winds, due out soon.

I enjoy helping young children grow and develop. I have earned certificates in Child Development/Early Childhood Education, from Eastfield College (Dallas Collage, now)

The children’s books are an extension of me as an early childhood educator and the books of poems are an extension of me as a spiritual woman.  I have gotten smiles and laughter from children and parents after these books are read. Hope that many more will find my writing beneficial.

I am very excited for the opportunity to attend the L.A. Times Festival of Storytellers April 23, 2022.  My husband and the 2 that are in High School will accompany me, and we are excited and pray for a safe and wonderful trip.
