A Haunting Tale Inspired by a Chilling Early 1900s True Crime
This story is based, in part, on a true crime that happened in the early 1900’s in St. Landry parish, Where a family had been spending a day out by the bayou. Before long, one of the children went missing, and people presumed the child dead until they found them days later. This particular story is a predominate story in Louisiana history. While the historical account acts as a warning to be vigilant at all times, it’s also a reminder that things can happen in the blink of an eye.
The inspiration behind Cabin by the Lake is drawn not only from this truly frightening historical crime but also from the mystical qualities that the swamps and bayous of Louisiana hold. While this story is a cautionary tale, it also draws on the duality of nature. Nature is both beautiful and terrifying all at the same time. The swamps and bayous of Louisiana are a testament to that every day.
A Chilling Tale to Stir Vigilance, Spark Curiosity, and Linger Long After the Last Page
Drawing from my own experience with books growing up, I write in such a way that all ages can enjoy them, with some exception, even though I do cater to an adult audience. I want Cabin by the Lake to lurk in the dark recesses of my readers mind as a reminder to always stay vigilant and to trust their instincts when something feels off. Likewise, I want my readers to explore nature and find their own mysteries around every corner and in every shadow that darkens their doorway.
Corvina Sweeney: A Voice Born from the Bayous, Rooted in Cajun, Italian, and Voodoo Traditions
Who is Corvina Sweeney? People frequently ask me this question since I started writing, but it has no simple answer. I was born and raised in the swamps and bayous of south Louisiana. I grew up in a Cajun/ Italian family and was surrounded by the Voodoo Culture of New Orleans.
I am a self-taught herbalist, with many years of practice and a huge animal lover. I’ve been an avid reader since I was in the fourth grade. My preferred genre, even as a young child, has always been horror and mystery. I think the reasons for this is that as a young child, my mother use to watch horror movies and my grandmother always enjoyed a good mystery novel. As a young child I was exposed to the arts.
My grandmother use to take me to dinner theaters when they would have a good murder mystery they were putting on. I immerse myself in the swamps and bayous, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature, which welcome me home after time away. I enjoy cooking and making fresh bread, like my great grandmother use to do.
I talk a great deal about the magic of the swamps and bayous in my books, but unless you experience it for yourself there are no words that can make someone truly understand.
I’d like to thank the wonderful staff at Readers Magnet for inviting me to talk about my book, Cabin by the Lake, and to all of the wonderful readers who make writing worth it.
