Virginia Stewart Metzler is a Christian author with a remarkable story. Her life shows that God is real and still talks to people today. Through her book, Our God Still Speaks, Virginia Metzler shares true stories from her life as a missionary and how God has guided her every step of the way.
A Young Missionary’s Life
Long before she became a published Christian author, Virginia Metzler was a young, newlywed living in a very different world.
At just 17, she and her first husband, Tommy, became missionaries in Liberia, West Africa. They were young and new to their faith, but God used their experiences to draw them closer to Him.
In Our God Still Speaks, Virginia shares many of these moments, showing how God provided for them in simple ways, like the unexpected gift of a bottle of Coca-Cola in a faraway place.
The book tells a humorous story about a time when she tried to make her mom’s famous chicken and dumplings, a dish she had been craving.
She had her mom’s recipe, but it was written with quite personal terminology, and it was missing one crucial step. Virginia dropped all the rolled-out dumplings into the boiling broth at once, and they all stuck together, creating one giant dumpling. She was embarrassed and humiliated, but her husband handled it with humor and compassion, which made her love him even more.
This simple story shows how God can even use a “dumpling disaster” to teach us about love and grace.
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Virginia Metzler’s Journey of Faith
Virginia Metzler’s faith journey was deeply tested when her husband tragically died in a plane crash.
At just 20 years old, she was a young widow with two small children, and she felt like life was over. But through the kindness of friends and her faith, she found the strength to move forward.
She had to leave Africa, a place she had grown to deeply love, and return to the United States. This was a heartbreaking time, but it was also a time when God showed His faithfulness. Her story is a powerful reminder that even in the middle of our most profound grief, God is with us and He can give us hope for the future.
Later in her life, she met and married Les Metzler, a wonderful man and her partner for over 58 years. Together, they continued their life of service, becoming support missionaries in the Philippines.
Their story shows that God can bring new love and new purpose, even after significant loss. They were a team, and their stories are a testament to God’s love and provision.
13 I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.
Lessons God Taught Metzler
The teachings that Virginia Metzler learned from God are simple but profound. She believes that God has a plan for each of us, and that our experiences, even the ones that seem small or unimportant, are a part of that plan.
Metzler shares a story about her time in Texas, before she and Les became missionaries in the Philippines. She had taken Spanish lessons because she had a strong feeling that God wanted her to.
Years later, when she and Les arrived in the Philippines and began language school, she discovered that the official language, Tagalog, had 1,500 pure Spanish words.
Her Spanish lessons had not been a waste of time; they had given her a head start in learning her new language.
This experience taught her a key lesson: that God will not waste anything He puts in our hearts to know or do.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Through her writings, Metzler’s spiritual insights are clearly shown, and they are perspectives we should all learn to follow.
She teaches that we need to be open to God’s guidance, even when it feels uncomfortable or difficult.
Metzler shares a story about finding herself in a remote area, needing a “quiet place” to meet with the Lord. She found a hill with a grand view of the surrounding mountains and ravine.
This shows how she valued her personal time with God and how important it was to her faith.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
