Welcome to Ellie's Corner

Ellie's CornerWelcome to Ellie’s Corner where minds mingle.  I am the author of One Caregiver’s Journey which is about the 9 ½ years I spent providing full time to care to my mother until her death at age 102.  If you or anyone you know is considering becoming a caregiver or is a caregiver my book is a must read with information that can make their journey a bit easier.

Enough about my book – With the exception of religion and politics I extend an offer to start communicating with any of the ReadersMagnet Author’s Lounge members.

Right now, one of the most paramount issues in all our lives is how are we are surviving the pandemic.  With the country slowly opening businesses that provide our needs how do you view your new normal?   This question isn’t about do you like wearing a mask or social distancing, but are you adapting.  Truly, there are lots of questions that could be asked, and we all have had ample time to think about what is important in our lives and what is not.

For me, GRATITUDE is the word that best describes how I have come through months of being alone in my home.  I am grateful to have a roof over my head, food in the pantry, family and friends who love me, the memories of a great 40-year career and now surviving in a solitary setting for several months.  I am grateful beyond measure for having had the opportunity to re-connect with friends and family, for my good health and retaining abundant energy and a hopeful outlook during these past months.   I (like most people I know) have spent time cleaning closets and drawers knowing what is old to me will be new to someone else.  I have donated bags and boxes of household items or clothes items that I have not used or worn in a long time.  I am grateful they can be used by someone else.

In researching Gratitude, I have found some interesting topics for discussion.  The Gallup Organization in 2019 said “The world took a negative turn in 2017 with global levels of stress, worry, sadness and pain hitting new highs.”  Researchers found that practicing gratitude has a positive affect on mental and physical health.  Gratitude is a buffer between stress and depression.

One of the most prevalent issues discussed throughout the pandemic lockdown is that people are suffering bouts of stress and depression.  Stress from job loss, business closures or the inability to meet friends socially, enjoy hobbies, go to the doctor or shopping at the mall.  Money worries are prevalent in this time of stress.  In my neighborhood a big stressor has been the cleaning lady isn’t coming.  I don’t have a cleaning lady but those who do sure miss her!

Gratitude allows us to celebrate the present, be more stress-resilient and strengthen social ties and self-worth.  Use gratitude to block those toxic emotions like envy, resentment, regret and depression.  Do I sound like Pollyanna?  Believe me, I am not – but I, like everyone else, have had months to take stock of what is important in my life.    I am more resilient and have better physical and mental health because I am truly grateful.

How do you look at gratitude?  Do you have optimism that allows you to reframe the negatives from the effects of the pandemic into a positive?   If it seems the pandemic has been a total negative, then it is time to recognize that we can use our ability to make choices and changes.  Turning the negative into a positive should elicit gratitude!

I am ready to listen and engage with my fellow authors on the topic of Gratitude!
