The Donut Hole by Robert Charles LeBeau

A Marines Real Life battle in vietnam book cover

This book does not explore the religious aspects of war. Your very belief is tested in combat, you must kill your enemy, or your enemy will kill you – that is the simple, hard cold fact. Because in my humble opinion, War is hell on Earth. Evil roams freely in War, and it will kill you, one way or another, with its evil intent. Nightmares are common and, in their fantasy, never reflect the real horror and the reality that War can bring to your mind. No matter what your personal spiritual beliefs are, you will be tested. The conduct of your intent will be your judge for life. It is your second guessing that can be dangerous to you. A wise Philosopher once said in Greece, “If you want real peace, you must always prepare for War.” This book is about war. It tells my experiences of the paths I took as a United States Marine in Vietnam. The mouths of many soldiers will say the same – the same soldiers who had shared my paths with the experiences of my many paths in life. I have not shared these words or reflections with anyone, except in bits and pieces, and that too, with other veterans in the form of bunker talk.

It is a book like no other War story you ever read. The biography starts with family and life in the fifties and early sixties. Then as a Marine recruit, then off to the Vietnam War. Read the events of the war in 67, then count the days left in the Nam and become a shortimer in-country surviving until the 68 TET offense surprise attack happened and changed all that. Survival now was in dought. We were caught off guard, the hose was leaking everywhere, chaos was everywhere, engage, engage, then hence, the Donut Hole, and Echo 4. Just living for one more day, became everybody’s problem. The army’s one-day casualties were only second to the later infamous, battle of “Hamburger Hill”. For the survival of Echo 4 was in dought. How did they survive these 11 Marines at Echo 4, you’ll have to read the story to find out. RC LeBeau

Just read the book. I was there from November 1967 to July 1968. Third squad lead in the Clutch Platoon. I never knew what Clutch stood for but the book brought back memories.
    Excellent read.
