Flash Back by John Turiano

2020 turned out to be a year like no other! As COVID-19 spread across the globe, virtually everyone was effected in some way. My knee surgery in April was cancelled along with many other people’s elective surgeries due to the pandemic. Hospitals were overwhelmed and a lockdown was ordered to contain the spread of the virus. Eventually the first wave diminished and businesses began to reopen. It turned out to be silver lining for me as I decided to see another doctor who agreed to do a double knee replacement, which was my preference. In September I had the surgery and began the long rehabilitation that I am still working through. In spite of all that, I somehow managed to publish my first two books, including FLASH BACK.

Blending science fiction and history together in an exciting new way, I have woven the two together in my debut novel FLASH BACK. The main character, Sam, journeys to Chicago in 1942 to investigate the murder of a leading scientist. While in the midst of a world at war, nations are racing to harness the power of the atom, and the University of Chicago is at the center of the research for the United States. As Sam digs deeper he is soon targeted by a professional killer and finds himself in over his head. Stranded and alone in another era, time is running out and Sam is faced with a dilemma: should he risk his life to prevent the murder? FLASH BACK is a fast-paced thriller with plenty of twists and turns. I think it will appeal to a wide range of people including sci-fi, mystery, adventure, and historical fiction readers.

Historical non-fiction has been one of my favorite genres and I thoroughly enjoyed researching the 1940s and in particular the Hyde Park area of Chicago. Sam’s travels also took me to many other times and locations including New Mexico, Afghanistan, Iraq and China. Take the journey with Sam as he struggles to reset history and save a life. But he is also driven by an ulterior motive which he keeps secret. I won’t reveal the motive and spoil the story, but suffice it to say there are many twists and turns to surprise you.

I began writing FLASH BACK several years ago while working as a software developer. When I retired I was able to devote my full attention to writing and finally had the time to complete it. Next came the daunting task of publishing. As an independently published author there was a huge learning curve, but I managed to publish my FLASH BACK in January. From the beginning I envisioned a trilogy and began the second book while the first was being edited. But just as I finished my first draft of the second book, the coronavirus first appeared in China. The story centers around hate and bigotry and interestingly takes place during a pandemic! It grew more and more eerie editing the story while the coronavirus spread across the globe. The second in the series, EXTREME PERIL, is now available on Amazon in print and digital formats.

I live in upstate New York with my wife, and two adult children who live nearby. We enjoy hiking, biking, camping, and most outdoor activities. I am currently working on the third and final book in the series. I am grateful to be featured on the Authors’ Lounge and hope you will join me on this journey of writing and traveling through time. FLASH BACK can be purchased at Amazon:

Customer Review:
“You MUST read!
A must read! Being an avid reader nearly my entire life I have (mostly) stopped reading book jackets and just buy what a favorite author has most recently written. My list of authors I’ll blindly buy is short, but it has officially gained another name: John Turiano. FLASH BACK is beautifully written with a seamless plot, and had something for everyone: mystery, SciFi, action, history, humor and more. I have already read it digitally, and my paperback version just arrived today! —tbm”
