Dr. Theresa Y. Wee, M.D., is leading a revolution—a rebellion against the current framework that does not view health as a bridge toward happiness. Finding lasting joy can only happen then!
Some think the ultimate goal of human life is happiness. But where do we start finding lasting joy? What fuels happiness?
Now, while outward things like success and relationships can play a very important role, the foundation upon which all joy rests on is very simple and quite often overlooked: good health.
The connection between finding lasting joy and one’s physical well-being is often intuitive. Yet, the science backs it up. The way that our bodies and our minds intersect with each other is quite intricate and reciprocal. If one is neglected, the other feels it.
The Body as the Foundation
The body is a complex machine. Like a machine, it operates when it’s fueled with nutritious food, gets enough rest, and moves regularly. Conversely, as a machine deteriorates when it isn’t maintained properly, a body burdened by unhealthy habits becomes sluggish and is prone to illness and stress. This physical depletion can dampen our spirits and make it harder to experience joy.
It has actually been found and accounted for that there is a strong correlation between healthy habits like exercise and maintaining a positive emotional state. Regular exercise and sweating are potent mood boosters, releasing endorphins and neurotransmitters in the brain that function as feel-good chemicals. This all contributes to a happier outlook in life, in self and everything.
Engines need the correct fuel—going back to the machine analogy. Our bodies also need a proper diet. What we eat plays a crucial role in the continued health of our body. The connection between a poor diet and more obstacles to finding lasting joy has been thoroughly documented.
Another thing we have to look out for is lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation is a very tricky culprit in the depletion of our happiness reserves. When we don’t get enough quality sleep, our cognitive function suffers, making it harder to focus and rein in our emotions. Prioritizing good sleep, which includes a regular sleep schedule and a relaxing bedtime routine, is essential for maintaining a positive outlook.
Thus, maintaining the body is essential to finding lasting joy.
Health Is the Bridge Toward Happiness
The impact of healthy living goes beyond just physical well-being. Good health empowers us to engage more fully with life.
When we feel physically strong and energized, we’re more open to new challenges and engaging in social activities. When our bodies are full, we have the capacity to reach further and pursue our passions. These experiences, in turn, fuel happiness and create a sense of fulfillment.
On the other hand, chronic health conditions can take a large toll on our mental well-being. Pain, fatigue, and the stress of managing a medical condition can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. This negative emotional state can then further exacerbate physical health issues, creating a vicious cycle.
The good news is that taking charge of our health is a decisive step towards finding lasting joy.
Finding Lasting Joy
Remember, finding lasting joy is a long journey with no clear end. There will be setbacks and days when you fall off track. The key is to be gentle with yourself and recommit to your healthy habits. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and find an approach that works for you in the long run.
