What is your book all about?
Children of the Outback is a dystopian dark fantasy novel that takes place in a dystopian version of Australia where ordinary people live in the mostly urbanized New Australian Republic to the east of the “Dog Fence” and magic wielders have made their home in the desolate Outback to the west of the fence. The book follows the story of Grace Walker, a girl from the Republic who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Outback. The book also follows the point of view of Skar Shepard, the man who kidnapped her, and Rudolfus Lesikar, one of the most feared dark magic wielders in the Outback.
What inspired you to write the book?
The inspiration for this book came from a novel length AU Harry Potter fanfiction that I read on fanfiction.net. Unfortunately, the fanfic is no longer on the website. The author removed it and reworked the storyline into an original dystopian sci-fi trilogy.
What is your target audience for the book?
My target audience for this Children of the Outback is older teenagers (basically age 17 or 18+) and new adult readers (people in their 20s) all the way to adults who enjoy dystopian fiction, dark fantasy, urban fantasy, and any combination of those. The age range is solely based on the darker themes present in or alluded to in the book. This is also the reason why I included a trigger warning in the description of the book.
What do you hope readers could get out from your book?
I, Amanda N. Newman, hope this book helps readers to realize that there’s multiple sides to every story (which is why the book is told from a first person multi point of view style). I also hope that readers take the fact that misfortune (and mental illness) does not discriminate and that there are many people fighting these invisible battles every day, even people you’d never expect.
What are your future goals/plans for the book?
My short-term goal for this book is for it to gain more reviews on Amazon and to gain a following. My long-term goals are for it to be adapted into a movie or TV show (either animated or live action), an audiobook, and possibly a video game. I also plan to add more books to this collection (I’m hoping to release book 2 in Spring of 2021).
And something more about yourself:
Let’s see… What can I really say about Amanda N. Newman? Aside from being a writer, I’m also an avid gamer, a huge animal lover, and I make all of my own book trailers. I’ve been writing ever since I was a child but only started becoming serious about it when I was in high school. I’ve also written a Young Adult Paranormal Fantasy series which currently has two books available for purchase. I wrote the first book of the paranormal fantasy series when I was only seventeen years old.
I would like to thank the Authors’ Lounge and the staff at Readers Magnet for giving me the opportunity to write this article and promote Children of the Outback.
