“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the community and make a positive impact on society, whether it is through local initiatives or international programs. Changing the world is a difficult process, and there are plenty of issues out there that require the altruism of volunteers to have any dent in solving them.

From looming environmental concerns to ever-present social justice issues, there are plenty of ways and avenues that an enterprising individual can take to get more involved and make a lasting and effectual difference in changing the world.

As Good as Gold

The act of volunteering itself is quite a selfless act, and if you have aspirations of changing the world, it is perhaps the best way to start. Volunteering requires a willingness to give a part of one’s time and energy to offer those in need help without the expectation of monetary compensation. Being a volunteer needs a lot of work, and, as such, only some are actually cut out to be one.

Certain qualities are necessary to be a good volunteer and make a meaningful contribution to society:

  • Empathy is the ability to engage with the feelings of others with understanding. Volunteers need to be able to put themselves in the shoes of those they are helping so as to better meet their needs and serve them best.
  • Reliability is a must if you want to be a volunteer. People need volunteers to be dependable and committed to their duties. They have to show up on time, follow through with their commitments, and be held accountable for their actions.
  • Patience is another crucial quality. Volunteering is by no means easy. It is extremely challenging, and it can be enormously frustrating, especially when you are dealing with individuals who are experiencing difficult circumstances. When faced with this, it is important that volunteers be patient and take the necessary time to build trust and relationships with those they are serving.
  • Flexibility is also a critical quality. Flexibility here does not mean that you have to be able to touch that itchy part of your back or anything like that, but “being adaptable.” The ability to be flexible means being adaptable to changing situations and circumstances with a variety of people, learning how to think creatively and solve problems innovatively.

Changing the World for the Better

  • There are plenty of issues that need volunteers. One of the most pressing issues society is facing today is the problem of climate change. With rising temperatures, melting polar ice caps, and other frequent natural disasters, it is incredibly important that action be taken to reduce the total global carbon footprint and better protect and preserve the environment.
  • Another issue is social justice. Inequality and discrimination continue to be pervasive in society, and volunteering with organizations that promote equal rights and opportunities for all can be a powerful way to make a difference.
  • Homelessness is another issue. With millions of people experiencing homelessness worldwide, we must work to provide support and resources for those in need.
  • Animal welfare is also important. With millions of animals suffering from abuse, neglect, and abandonment, supporting organizations that protect and care for animals is essential.

Servants Heart from the Voice of a Volunteer by Jamie Pulos-Fry is a wonderful guide to how volunteering can be a transformative and compelling experience. Copies are available in all major online bookstores.
